Historically, the major economic center of a state or region often becomes the focal point of political power, and becomes a capital through conquest or amalgamation. This was the case for London and Moscow. The capital naturally attracts the politically motivated and those whose skills are needed for efficient administration of government such as lawyers, journalists, and public policy researchers
So im guessing any of the other big cities, manchester, liverpool, birmingham etc

London is the capital city of England (Edinburgh for Scotland, Cardif for Wales and Belfast for Northern Ireland) London is also where the government of the United Kingdom meet (Parliment) and the UK is governed from there, so in that respect it is the capital of the UK. The (labour) government conceded and gave Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland mickeymouse governments - answerable to London to keep the locals there a little quieter (and keep the politicians in their jobs), but it is still all run from London really.

Manchester. Its not as big as Birmingham but it a damn sight better. It have transport links better than most and the busiest airport outside london so its basically the second capital anyway. Birmingham? ha your having a laugh arnt you. lol
Then again Preston was set to be capital if the Germans got control and York has had a dibble itself at being capital.
Birmingham. lol

After the big nuclear war, the only people who will be left will be Members of Parliament - probably only those in 'power' and civil servants and local government employees. They all have their bunkers marked out and constructed - I guess the secret site for the alternative government mentioned above will be part of that scheme.
Well - jolly good I say - they can live the remainder of their lives up to their necks in the hell hole they've created.

Birmingham makes sense from the point of view of geography, surface communications (road/rail/air), etc., but they'd probably move to Cheltenham because of the presence of GCHQ and other secret communications centres; I understand that there's a hidden second seat of government already prepared thereabouts, for political rather than natural disasters.

London's being abandoned as we talk, Do you know how much property cost's around here ? Oxford would be no good, as its just as likely to be flooded too.Think it should be Birmingham, but they'd have to learn proper English before that can happen :- )

I would suggest Birmingham would be the likely candidate.
But for pure fun I'll recommend Hull and watch the sparks fly!
