There are several formats for movies
AVI - created by Microsoft and the oldest of the movie formats. Large files and high quality
MPEG or MPG - a public domain format that is very popular. Ask multiple setting and can produce high, medium and low quality movies
WMV - created by Microsoft to respond to the size issue with AVI files. Lower quality, but produces smaller video files. Becoming popular on Internet because of small size. But can have harmful information embedded in the files.
VOB - format used for movies on DVDs. When you burn a video DVD, any of the above formats are converted to VOB on the DVD
Also, some less common ones...
MOV - format owned by Apple. Requires Quicktime to view
RM - format owned by Real One. Requires Real One Player to view
There are dozens of other formats, including ones for Flash animation, which are gaining popularity. But are normally only used on the Internet. Also there are some formats for the Unix/Linux PCs.

There are a lot of video compression formats. The .avi is actually not a format, but a container. You can DivX, XviD, etc to an avi file.
