There are plenty of good web sites out there that will cover this subject. Basically, you should be prepared to support yourself and your family as if you were camping. IE: No electric, no grocery stores, no transportation except your own feet. Make up a survival kit and keep it in an easy to get to location in your home. Have a second one if you can afford it, and keep it in your vehicle. You should include the following for starters. A high quality flint and striker, water purification pills, K103 Iodine pills (In case of nuclear event), water proof & wind proof matches, good quality compass, basic rations, a high quality survival knife (not a bowie knife or military knife), and for the home a gun with plenty of ammo. A 12 gauge or larger shot gun is best if your going to own only one gun. If your going to own more than one also get a 22 rifle, and at least a 38 cal handgun. If you wanted to go all the way, you can stash a few flashlights that need no batteries, a tent, a few sleeping bags, and parkas. Make sure they are light weight in case you need to move around with them.
