Social science is the study of society and how it is formed, views and beliefs. Key thinkers in social science are people like Karl Marx, Durkheim, Eagles, Hubert Spencer, Darwin, Edward Osborn Wilson and Richard Darkins. In the past religion had a great control in how society was structured and our beliefs and then we were introduced to new ideas. Darwin is possible the most famous because he challenged conventional thinking by challenged religion, by saying we are related to the ape. Richard Darkin's book the "Selfish gene" talks about that we are here to reproduce and to look for the best genes to carry on, he is a famous atheist. The American equivalent to Darkins is Edward Osborn Wilson who wrote the book Sociobiology, he has study bio diversity which is how one specie will arrive and others will die out, because of this new specie, however other species can arrive that are compatible with a new specie, so he has study environments and ecology, and he has also studied animal behavior such as ants. Herbert Spencer was what one calls a functionalist, he believes that everything has a function, he was also famous for his friendship with George Elliot who is a woman using a man's name, so she could sell her books. Herbert Spence was famous for saying that a woman should have small features, he never married George Elliot because she had a big mouth, how times have changed if he could see Angelina Jolie mouth he would never consider it attractive. Durkheim I think studies suicide and who is more prone to it, and why, I don't know much about him. Karl Marx, wrote "The Capitol", which was written in German first.
So basically social scientist look at society and how it evolved, and how it is changing. Its a bit like sociology but it deals with animals, and environments more and new challenges.
