it better using crossover cable
then after you connecting them via cable click on local area connection and press properties ---->internet protocol (tcp/ip)-->press properties
then select radio button use the following ip Address
ip address : 192.168.1.1
subnetmask: 255.255.225.0
for the pc
ip address : 192.168.1.2
subnetmask: 255.255.225.0
for laptop and also right click on my computer go to properties--->computer name nad make sure both computer use the same workgroup name e.g WORKGROUP
and if you also want internet sharing in tcp/ip setting enter ip address of computer that directly connected to internet in the default gateway place

While there are ways to set up an "ad-hoc" network where you can connect two PCs directly like that, it is a process you would have to repeat each time you want to have them talk.

It would be best to invest in a router (about $50 at any electronics store or Walmart). It would allow you to configure a network one time and be able to use it regularly after that. Plus, it is you have (or get) high speed Internet (DSL/Cable), it will allow you to share the Internet between the two PCs. As with a hub you can join more than two PCs together if you want to have friends over for a night of gaming.

I just came across a site that sends you a laptop for free! I'm ordering mine right now, it's a Sony VAIO and it looks really hot!
