if you played the game, you'll know the Cloud is the big bad ex-SOLDIER, however, you then find out that Cloud was never in SOLDIER, but his friend Zack was. When Zack died, Cloud took all of his stories from SOLDIER, and began to tell them like they were his own. Eventually, he began to believe his own lies. Also, I believe Zack was Aeris's first boyfriend. If you've seen FFVII Advent Children, at the end, you see the spirits of Zack and Aeris walking off together

They met when Cloud tried to get into SOLDIER,Zack,at one point in the story was Aerith's boyfriend.Check Wikipedia,lots of information there.
