What the hell is going on? 400 to heat a house! Since when is a gas bill more than rent? I take great care to shut my doors, cover windows and turn the heat down 5 degrees everyday upon leaving. This is the first cold week of the year. My bills are just climbing.

This month 400! And i havent done anything different than previous months.
I had my boiler efficiency checked, my radiators have been bled. Everything is fine. Sounds like the gas comany is screwing people, but they wont admit.
Sorry its more of a rant and not a question. Im going insane with the rising bills. How is everyone else coping this year?

I totaly agree with you.....it's crazy. It's been warm up untill this week ( I live in central NYS ) My furnace burns propane and it cost me so far $250 a month for heat. The funny part is I also have a woodstove and use it dureing the daytime. When the woodstove is burning my furnace is off...so why is it costing me so much for propane ? I guess if we stop and think the answer is clear and simple......GREED. and Washington is in bed with them. So what do we do ? I guess the choice is simple...pay the price or freeze to death.

This year I have electric heat. Last year I had gas heat and a very drafty apartment. My first killer bill was $150 for one month. I covered the windows with plastic, cardboard, and used caulk for the cracks. I removed my a/c unit from the window. I also closed the doors to close off unused rooms. I turned down my thermostat to 52-58 degrees and bought an oil filled heating unit. My next gas bill was $30. My electric bill went up 30 bucks but I saved more than $100. I also moved the heating unit to the room I was actually in. Living room during the day and bedroom at night.

When looking at the graph of my gas usage for the year, it really looked like an obscene gesture. Cutting my gas bill by $100 a month was my middle finger to the gas company. :)
