I would prefer to go Hong Kong and here are some of the reasons:
1. Shopping galore!!
2. Lots and lots of nice place to eat (original dimsum!)
3. attractions: Ocean Park and newly opened Disneyland
4. You can also visit China afterwards! ^^
5. Victoria Peak for the whole view of Hong Kong
6. Jumbo Boat Restaurant (food is superb!!)

Yes I know Singapore also has shopping and attractions and nice places to eat but generally Singapore price is higher and there's (honestly) not much place to visit. Disneyland is the best there is! ^^

I cannot think of anything else but if you want to compare more:
www.visitsingapore.com for Singapore infos
www.discoverhongkong.com for HK infos

Whatever choice you made, I hope you have lots of fun!!

You can consider the following points.
1. Tenure. if your trip is going to be around 1 week, then i'll say go Hong Kong. You can visit Disneyland and the shopping and food is fabulous!
2. Budget. if your parents and you are on a budget trip, you can consider Singapore. The food there is generally cheaper, if you go to hawker centres etc, not considering restaurants.
3. Safety. If you are going to be alone most of the time on the trip, i would suggest Singapore, cos it's a much safer place than HK.
Congrats on your graduation and i think your parents are superb to bring you abroad!

Actually, Singapore is a city state (country) and Hong Kong is a city within a country (China). They are both very interesting. Hong Kong is much bigger. Singapore is more western and cleaner. Both have very heavy Chinese influence, with Hong Kong's being greater. Given the choice to visit either again, I'd choose Singapore.

I think you should ask yourself what you like to gain from the trip.

If you're looking for a cultural experience, SIN is better. While HK is more authentic Chinese (Cantonese to be precise), SIN is more mix of Asian (multi-cultural with Chinese, Malays, Indians as the main roots).

If you want shopping, it's a tie. both offers good shopping venues. Branded stuff are about the same.
Clothings - HK has more cheap imports from China, while SIN sources from thailand, malaysia, indonesia, and india.
Electronics - SIN has better choices.
Imitation brands - HK's street markets win hands down. But i suggest you don't get this... ;-)

Food - Assuming you folks are adventureous... HKG has more authentic Tim Sum or chinese food. But SIN is surely cheaper if you go to hawker centers (food centres without aircon). It also have more international variety, where you can easily find indian, chinese, malay, middle-east, italian, french, mexican, american, etc.

Entertainment - A tie again. While HKG nightlife (clubs/bars) had always been percieved to be more happening, I felt the nite scenes in SIN had been catching up quite a fair bit in recent years. check out Zouk, Ministry of Sound, St. James' Power Station, on the web.

Main Tourist Attractions HK-
DisneyLand
OceanWorld
Side trip to Macau (casino) / Shenzheng (even cheaper shopping & pirated dvd, branded stuff)

Main Tourist Attractions SIN-
Sentosa
Zoo / Birdpark / Night Safari
Side trip to Batam/Bintan (resorts for beach/sea lover) / JB, Malaysia (even cheaper food, shopping & pirated DVDs)

Depends on yr preferences.

My feel is shopping in HK is cheaper. More interesting night markets. Electronics - ie. mobile phone, PSP, PC parts, Singapore is slightly cheaper but you need to know where to buy (not mainstreet dept store).

Singapore is more efficient, safer, easier to move around, more foreigner-friendly in terms of language and signages, etc. HK is more vibrant, people stays up much later. Hotels in HK is more expensive though. Both has interesting sites to visit though HK has disneyland & ocean park if u are interested in the theme park scene.

Your decision:

HongKong is more messy / worse organised / poluted / less safe but more authentic chinese.

Singapore is clean / perfect organised / clean / very safe but more western.

As you never travelled abroad the city HongKong can be culture shock as Singapore you will feel more safe.

Your decision

Hong Kong by a very long shot. Singapore can only be compared against Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta or Manila.

Oh, Hong Kong by a LONG way.

Singapore is a boring, sterile, boring (did I say that twice?) city. It's also a dictatorship that doesn't even allow chewing gum !!!

Go to HK. It's vibrant, exciting and great sightseeing and shopping. Great food. Great everything!!!! You'll feel like you're in Asia instead of Singapore which tries to be a Western city in an Asian country.

Congrats on your graduation.
