Piracy has become a global problem due to rapid advancement in technology. It has assumed alarming proportions all over the world and all the countries are trying to meet the challenge by taking stringent legislative and enforcement measures.
Mainly, there are three types of piracy, namely, piracy of the printed word, piracy of sound recordings and piracy of cinematograph films. The object of the pirate in such cases is to make money and avoid payment of legitimate taxes and royalties ….. The emergence of new techniques of recording, fixation and reproduction of audio programmes, combined with the advent of video technology has greatly helped the pirates. It is estimated that losses to the film producers and other owners of copyright amount to several crores of rupees. The loss to the Government in terms of tax evasion also amounts to crores of rupees.

PIRACY IN INDIA
The popular movie VCDs are smuggled into India from Malaysia and thereafter used as master for both VHS and VCD replication. With standard CD-Writers getting cheaper, this growth has spread all over India and will copiously grow if effective measures are not taken soon. Currently, piracy accounts for 80% of the total home entertainment product.
With the advent of "Internet", "Satellite TV", and "Cable TV", today’s consumer is well informed of the new releases abroad. With all hype, an average consumer wants to see the film and if this comes to him cheap, he will even reciprocate his support to this medium or source.

Piracy is so deep-rooted that if good quality and much cheaper pirated product can be easily availed of against the same film whether legally released is colossal question in consumer’s mind. So much so that sometimes the press even ends up reviewing a pirated product.
Main scopes of pirating films are in following areas:
A. Making of pirated VCD
B. Making of pirated DVD
C. Illegal screening of VCD & DVD on to the Cable T.V. Network.

The process of making of pirated VCD & DVD starts mainly from overseas territory. Once the print is landed at Gulf or Malaysia, which is normally on Tuesday or Wednesday, the telecine transfer is done at priority basis and which is used for as master tape to make the VCD & DVD. This VCD & DVD then circulated all over the World through an established chain of pirates which are ultimately converted to the multiple copies and circulated and sold through rental shops (Video Libraries) or whole-sale markets like Palika Bazaar and Lajpatrai market of New Delhi, Lamington Road of Mumbai and so on.
These pirated copies become a temptation to the cable operator & they screen the same to their customers as value added service through their video Channels. It is always a competition between the cable operators as to who shows the film first and there the library and shop makes more money. Actually the video channel is main source of income for the cable T.V. operators by way of advertisement.
