Piracy has become a global problem due to rapid advancement in technology. It has assumed alarming proportions all over the world and all the countries are trying to meet the challenge by taking stringent legislative and enforcement measures.
Mainly, there are three types of piracy, namely, piracy of the printed word, piracy of sound recordings and piracy of cinematograph films. The object of the pirate in such cases is to make money and avoid payment of legitimate taxes and royalties ….. The emergence of new techniques of recording, fixation and reproduction of audio programmes, combined with the advent of video technology has greatly helped the pirates. It is estimated that losses to the film producers and other owners of copyright amount to several crores of rupees. The loss to the Government in terms of tax evasion also amounts to crores of rupees.

PIRACY IN INDIA
The popular movie VCDs are smuggled into India from Malaysia and thereafter used as master for both VHS and VCD replication. With standard CD-Writers getting cheaper, this growth has spread all over India and will copiously grow if effective measures are not taken soon. Currently, piracy accounts for 80% of the total home entertainment product.

With the advent of "Internet", "Satellite TV", and "Cable TV", today’s consumer is well informed of the new releases abroad. With all hype, an average consumer wants to see the film and if this comes to him cheap, he will even reciprocate his support to this medium or source.

Piracy is so deep-rooted that if good quality and much cheaper pirated product can be easily availed of against the same film whether legally released is colossal question in consumer’s mind. So much so that sometimes the press even ends up reviewing a pirated product.

Main scopes of pirating films are in following areas:
A. Making of pirated VCD

B. Making of pirated DVD

C. Illegal screening of VCD & DVD on to the Cable T.V. Network.

The process of making of pirated VCD & DVD starts mainly from overseas territory. Once the print is landed at Gulf or Malaysia, which is normally on Tuesday or Wednesday, the telecine transfer is done at priority basis and which is used for as master tape to make the VCD & DVD. This VCD & DVD then circulated all over the World through an established chain of pirates which are ultimately converted to the multiple copies and circulated and sold through rental shops (Video Libraries) or whole-sale markets like Palika Bazaar and Lajpatrai market of New Delhi, Lamington Road of Mumbai and so on.

These pirated copies become a temptation to the cable operator & they screen the same to their customers as value added service through their video Channels. It is always a competition between the cable operators as to who shows the film first and there the library and shop makes more money. Actually the video channel is main source of income for the cable T.V. operators by way of advertisement.

sometimes piracy occurs to fill the need for goods that might otherwise not be available. There is an Indian Market that I go to nearby and nearly all the films are pirated. I'm not anywhere near india and those films would not be available if they were not pirated. They would not be replaced by non-pirated originals, they would just be absent.

Secondly, sometimes people aren't willing to take a risk on purchasing something they don't know anything about, but if they an get a track of an album or some music videos for free then they are more likely to buy the whole album or purchase the movie if they can find it. that's the way it is for me.

piracy is a problem and there are people who download much more than they could ever watch or listen to, but that's not the majority, I think.

it is close to no longer attainable to absolutely end song piracy- until eventually each and every of the authorities come down authentic complicated on those who receive stuffs onto their pcs and stuff. yet having reported that, you end one website, yet another one pops up. it is going to develop right into a round-the-bush chase. the only reason it form of feels that musicians would properly be extremely disillusioned through the entire piracy component is they wont get as a lot royalty as they could if all those who listened to their song offered their unique cds. yet when you're speaking about song appreciation- i dont imagine help for the musician is compromised in any respect. even without piracy, i dont extremely see musicians suffering because of it. in truth, they nonetheless are very much better off than us. they stay in luxurious, etc. i guess that 0.5 of the target audience in a rock live performance receive song illegally- no longer because they dont like the singer or tutor no help (why else ought to they spend 1000's for the live performance?). and so if i love one hundred artistes, do I even ought to purchase one hundred cds? each and every from time to time listeners like only particular songs from an artiste, so as that they dont see the point of shopping for the entire album. plus at 20 funds, i ought to quite get myself a blouse, which i am going to positioned on more desirable in many cases than i song in to that particular artiste's album. it is close to no longer attainable. i cant say i extremely help the end piracy component at cases. people do have priorities. why cant musicians and the song organizations themselves arise with a diverse attitude to the entire count number number? perchance 20 funds a month subscription to a information superhighway website to get entry to to tens of millions of songs available? that wont be too undesirable, aint it? i'm very particular that musicians go with to be supported for his or her song.
