saying something in Windows was updating and downloading. He came back after and hour and it was finishing up. I'm not sure how to take this, since he has (and still does on occasion) download games without asking me. I don't want to blame him for this unless I know for sure. Is there some kind of history for Windows that I can pull up that will show me what the computer was doing at 2am?

I think it's normal for Windows to update automatically in the wee hours of the morning. I personally shut my computer down every night. I also have it set up so no one can get on it without a password that only I know. (there is a way around this, but unless your son is a computer guru, or is best friends with one, he'll never figure it out.) Also, I have my computer in the main part of my house so I always know what my kids are doing.
You could look at your temporary internet files. In Explorer, click tools, then internet options, then view files. Look in the Last Accessed column for the time and date you want to know about, then look in the column on the far left and see what site the computer was on at that time. Of course, he could have cleared the internet files. But if he hadn't done anything wrong, he would have no reason to do that. So if there is nothing there for that date and time, you'll know he was up to something.
But it doesn't sound to me like he was up to anything.
I no longer use Explorer- I switched to FireFox, and just discovered I don't know how to check my Internet files. So I am going to go ask.

I do not know why do you need to keep the computer on all the time, you can turn it off whenever not needed, and of course you can turn the internet access off by shutting down the modem so that there are no unpleasant surprises.

probably only in the registry , since if it's something he shouldn't have downloaded , he's probably deleted the browse history.
but be careful , you need to be experienced in the registry other wise you could damage the operating system & have to start all over again

i dont think you would able to check what the com was doing.
if its a windows update, nid not worry but if is a virus or so it will be bad.
you can still check ur son's internet browsing history though
(maybe he has gone to some unclean website)

There are lots of automatic updates and your son's story is completely credible. Give the guy a break.
