My friend told me last nite that if someone has a baby prematurely(we both live in PA) and it weighs less than 5 lbs the mother can apply for some type of assistance and get a monthly stipend for the baby. Has anyone else heard of this and if so how would one apply? I've never heard of it but it seems like a good idea since some preemies require additional care and the mother may need to take extra unpaid maternity leave. Please ONLY answer if you have information and don't just write back that you've never heard of it either. Thanks.

about a month after my youngest son was born i was advised by several friends and family that I could apply for SSI for my son.. he was born 6 weeks early and weighed only 3 1/2 pounds, he was on a special formula and yes did require more attention than most newborns do.. I'm not exactly sure if cases of preemies are automaticly approved but there is a good chance there is but being preemie is not the only reason for them to be approved.. most preemies do have other medical conditions that require the extra attention which is usualy the reason for the assistance.. my son is now 11 and yes he still does recieve asssistance but mostly now because he has slight developemental problems and behavorial problems that he is being treated for and of course he is still considered small for his age group but for the most part he is healthy.. so i'd say give it a try all they can do is deny it if they don't agree that you should have the assistance but it certainly does come in handy when raising a preemie.. :)

Disability Services division of Department of human services.

Also many hospitals give out the information with applications at birth.

Some states do not offer this. But you can allways apply for SSI.
