Elimination by addition method

x - y = 1- - - - -Equation 1
3x - y = 3- - - -Equation 2
- - - - - - -

Mulltiply equation 1 by - 1

- 1(x) - (- 1)(y) = - 1(1)

- x - (- y = - 1

-x + y = - 1 . . .New equation 1

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Elimination of y and solving for x

-x + y = - 1
3x - y = 3
- - - - - - - -
2x = 2

2x/2 = 2/2

x = 1

The answer is x = 1

Insert the x value into equation 2

Solving for y

3x - y = 3

3(1) - y = 3

3 - y = 3

3 - y - 3 = 3 - 3

- y = 0

-1( - y ) = -1(0)

y = 0

The answer is y = 0

Insert the y value into equation 2

x-y=1: x=1+y ::::::: multipler: x=1 and y=0
3x-y=3

3(1+y)-y=3
3+3y-y=3
3+2y=3
2y=3-3
2y=0
y=0/2

y=0

---------
if y=0 then

x=1+y
x=1+0
x=1
