A genotype is the genetic labelling for an individual characteristic. It is the type of gene they have, such as homozygous (RR or rr for example) or heterozygous (Rr). Phenotype is the physical appearance of the genotype. For example, if R is dominant for red flowers and r is recessive for white flowers then:
genotype RR== Phenotype red
genotype Rr == Phenotype red
genotype rr == Phenotype white

genotype is a description of the allels of the organism so if you describe a mutant allel and assume the rest of the animal is wildtype you are describing the genotype. The phenotype is often the effect of those genes, but is most accurately the description of a set of physical attributes or behaviors. Using PCR to amplify a gene, and then visualizing the resultant with electrophoresis turns a genotype into a pcr phenotype.

In the pea plant example, for instance, plants with smooth peas might be carrying two dominant alleles for that characteristic (RR) or one dominant and one recessive allele (Rr). Geneticists use the term genotype to refer to the combination of genes that code for a trait, while the term phenotype describes the physical manifestation of that trait. Therefore, the presence of two dominant alleles for pea texture (RR) would reflect the genotype while a smooth pea indicates the phenotype.

A phenotype is a gene trait that can be observed, like blue eyes or blond hair. A genotype is the collective alleles. I am not sure what your history in biology is, but just in case: Alleles are the gene's "choices" Hope that this helps you out!
