It's an older, scary movie from the 1960s or 70s where people's spirits are stored inside colorful glass bottles in a room or basement of an old mansion. The house is haunted, and a man is fooled into coming there, believing that the people are real - but they aren't. He is lured by a woman who seeks his help (but she turns out to be a ghost too). And when he finally realizes what's going and that the house wants to trap his spirit there as well, he tries to escape (ghostly vapor chases him all the way outside), but just when you think he's made it out the main gate closes on his back, killing him and trapping him.

I have searched imdb extensively (through all of their haunted house listings and by plot) and I've done general google searches as well. I'm just not having much luck... So, any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Legal! Both great suggestions that I will look into (although the main character was not Nicholson, of that I am sure). I have also looked into a movie called "Moonchild" (1974) which involves similar elements. I just can't find any listings with enough details, reviews, pictures etc to be able to tell if it is the one I'm looking for. I appreciate all of your help, thanks so much!

Here's another neat place to look:

only two possible movies come to mind:
The Terror (1963) - with Jack Nicholson
Plot listed as: A young officer in Napoleon's army pursues a mysterious woman to the castle of an elderly Baron where he discovers that she is the pawn of an old witch bent on driving the Baron to suicide.

or
House of the Living Dead (1973)
plot: A mad scientist (Mark Burns) is conducting hideous occult experiments at the family estate of Brattling Manor, monkeying about with things man was not meant to know, including the transfer and containment of living souls. It's only a matter of time before he begins to experiment on the souls of human beings - including his own family.

I'll check around and see if anything else fits your description.

Not sure if Moonchild fits your criteria. I found this as the summary: A young man finds himself trapped in a cycle of reincarnation, reliving the same twenty five years over and over, in this strange drama that was the master's thesis at USC for filmmaker Alan Gadney. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

although imdb.com's description matches a bit better:
A young artists spends the night at a mysterious inn, where he meets a group of strange, sullen people, among them the innkeeper's beautiful daughter. What he doesn't know is that he has wandered into a kind of spiritual void, and the inn's residents are engaging in a battle over his soul.

If you still can't find it you can write to DVD WORLD magazine (printed and circulated in the U.K) they are a typical boys magazine, they search for hard to find films, they specialise in horror and sexplotation. I don't know their address.
