It's an older, scary movie from the 1960s or 70s where people's spirits are stored inside colorful glass bottles in a room or basement of an old mansion. The house is haunted, and a man is fooled into coming there, believing that the people are real - but they aren't. He is lured by a woman who seeks his help (but she turns out to be a ghost too). And when he finally realizes what's going and that the house wants to trap his spirit there as well, he tries to escape (ghostly vapor chases him all the way outside), but just when you think he's made it out the main gate closes on his back, killing him and trapping him.

I have searched imdb extensively (through all of their haunted house listings and by plot) and I've done general google searches as well. I'm just not having much luck... So, any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Legal! Both great suggestions that I will look into (although the main character was not Nicholson, of that I am sure). I have also looked into a movie called "Moonchild" (1974) which involves similar elements. I just can't find any listings with enough details, reviews, pictures etc to be able to tell if it is the one I'm looking for. I appreciate all of your help, thanks so much!
Here's another neat place to look:
