The official one is required. Microsoft has not included, nor will they support, any third party drivers but the one they put on the system specifically for their product.

For USB, only their official dongle will work, which you can find here at Buy.com for only $80. It's usually $100: http://www.buy.com/prod/xbox-360-wireless-network-adapter-wi-fi/q/loc/108/201975281.html?dcaid=17379
It should be noted that you can also use the old MN-740 wireless adapter for the old Xbox. It's tough to find it for much cheaper than the 360 one, though. I would go with the 360 one, since it supports WPA encryption and the MN-740 doesn't.

I cannot imagine this would work because the USB adapter would need some kind of device driver..easy on a PC, not so easy on an Xbox
Yeah..that sounds impossible to me

ya turn off router, all desktops, xbox, and so on. plug the ethernet into an open port on the router, and into the 360. turn router, xbox, and so on. on. under pressure out connection, utilising an ethernet cable as defined, is likely lots greater much less costly than going instantaneous. the instantaneous adapter for xbox is particularly costly from what I even have heard. solid success
