what Roman soldiers and Roman gladiators wore varied greatly, i can give you a rough description of a typical legionares outfit:
Breatplate of steel (though obviously if you are dressing up a child just get a fake dressing up one)with a white or red t-shirt underneath
Kilt, the romans wore skirts, but not like scots kilts, a above knee linen sheet will suffive, with over hanging armour strips.
traditional roman helmet, looks a bit like a metal skull cap? that is the best i can describe, with metal cheek protectors.
a short sword
a body shield (looks like a large rectangular panel slightly curved, painted red with a form of design in the middle.
maybe a spear, red cape or standard to add on.
If you go to a facny dress shop you can find most of it, or if you live near any roman sites which have a museum youll find they stock little kits, or some better pictures to have a look.
