I'm looking to buy a Handheld that i can use in WiFi spots for checking emails and websites, as well as using it to chat in MSN Messenger or Yahoo. What's the cheapest I can get away with in the UK? Has the PSP console got good web capabilities?

The psp lacks a keyboard and the "keyboard" menu is very poor.
Do not buy one for the sole purpose of browsing. In all other respects the psp is fantastic and if you want a games/music/video player that will also go on the internet then the akward text input may be a sacrifice worth making.

I have an O2 xda mini s (touch screen and slide out keyboard), despite the smaller screen it is much better for internet access and you could maybe get something similar (for little money with a contract) or try ebay for something like a blackberry, orange spv or even a Nokia communicator.

None of them will provide the same browsing experience that you could get from a laptop though.

We've been Nintendo folks for years and we looked into the PSP before buying the DS. For our money, we love the DS... we have 3 of them in our house. We can play the Gameboy Advance games we have plus the new DS games, which are awesome and are only getting better. The PSP just didn't have the gaming capacity that we wanted and the movies, well, we have a portable DVD player so we don't need to watch movies on the PSP. Your mileage may vary, but we definitely prefer the DS.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox C550. It was dearer than a PSP, but worth every penny. I got mine on offer, so I paid a lot less than the usual price.
It has a VGA screen, which makes for a much better experience than the typical lower resolution PDA. I don't use the built in Pocket IE for the web. Instead I use Opera Mobile, which is just great on a PDA.
The nice thing about a PDA compared to a laptop, is that you can always have it around. I never leave home without mine. It just sits in my shirt pocket.
There's some great games around and I use mine for listening to music and radio via wi-fi and on the SD card.

PSP browsing is pretty crap, i've got an i-mate jasjar and the small(ish) 640x480 screen size doesn't lessen the internet experience at all. It's got msn and there is a yahoo prog you can download. Was £600 but there is a few cheaper similar makes about

If you just want a device with WiFi and maybe for games, get the Nintendo DS Lite and the internet pack. It has good graphics and a touch screen. Argos and many websites sells them.

Get yourself a laptop. PSP or PDA screen are not big enough to make your webbrowsing comfortable.
