The movie is "Seeds Of Evil" (1975). I saw this movie late one night recently so it's still fresh in my mind. It's about an evil gardener who has the ability to turn himself into a living tree and back again. He would seduce his rich female clients as a man then murder their husbands in tree form. The scene you described in your question was when a husband of one of the women climbed into bed thinking his wife was under the sheets found the tree waiting for him to kill him.
