If you have a Combi boiler then use the hot or cold, it's the same water. If you have an old system with a storage tank in the loft, USE THE COLD MAIN, as there will be all sorts of debri between there and the hot tap, via the hot water cylinder.
This is the reason that you MUST have a cold mains tap in the kitchen, best in the bathroom too, as you could clean your teeth with cold water from the same storage tank.

If you have an old system with hot and cold water storage tanks it is clearly better to use MAINS cold water, as your storage tanks get all sorts of dirt in them. I've even heard of dead bugs and small animals being in tanks without lids.
Even in a modern system where the hot water is heated on demand from the mains, it is better to use cold mains water, as repeated boiling/heating increases the concentration of any salts and many of the chemicals in the water.
If your question is about energy saving then using water that is already hot would be better.
And just boiling water in a kettle isn't good enough to kill all bugs. That is why when sterilising things for babies or surgical use the water has to be boiling for 3 to 10 minutes, depending what it is, and how it is to be used.

The cold water tank in the loft supplies the hot water system. Most cold water tanks are open and can get contaminated with dust bugs and all sorts. So fill your kettle from the cold tap or bottled water.

I dont think it makes any difference, as once the water is boiled it is sterilized anyway and so germs/bacteria killed and if you have a filter in your kettle like most do no dirt would come out. I have done this many a time and I am still standing and have never been ill. Hot water from the hot water tap would also boil quicker.

HOT. First of all you are about to boil it so you will spend less energy doing it so less money. Boiling water destroys all the bacteria that could be found in water, although water as a substance has its own self-cleaning system (chemically speaking). The inside of a water tank is no different from the interior of the pipes the cold water is coming through. Plus next to the hot water tank you must have a special filter installed in order to catch the impurities, which you don't really have on the cold water pipes.

I always use the cold tap but to be honest I've never thought about why. Does the hot water come from different source. Think the cold water is cleaner or something

Cold tap because when it is boiled it makes it easier for the kettle to boil out the germs in the water.

hi,it is usually best to fill the kettle from the cold tap as this comes from your water mains so it`s fresher, the hot tap comes from your water tank which is going to be stale, not suitable for drinking.hope this helps.

Always use freshly drawn water straight from the cold tap. This is fresh and clean and not been pumped through the hot pipes/boiler etc. Tastes different too!

Water from the cold tap doesn't carry as much dissolved sediment. Water from the hot tap evaporates a bit of the chlorine used to purify it. I guess you could say it's a flavor issue.
