I'm assuming you mean a closed network of just two PCs.

If both machines have network cards, you can use a cross-over Ethernet cable to connect them. Then, you can hard code IP addresses for each one.

Again, I'm assuming Windows XP.

Right-click on My Network Places (open the network control panel, that is)
Right-click on Local Area Connection
Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the dialog box
Click the Properties button.
In the Properties dialog, click Use the following IP
For IP address, use 192.168.17.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway doesn't matter, but you can use 192.168.17.1
don't worry about DNS for now

On the other machine, do the same thing, but use 198.168.17.2 for IP address

That should connect the to boxes via IP.

Hope that helps!

You need two network adapters on at least one pc, and use a crossover cable to connect one pc to the other on one nic, with the other connecting to the internet. Does at least one of your pc's have this type of configuration?
