Note: Kohal, Sirma and Kajal are the same thing. There is no difference, just they way they call it in different places. Different Cultures have various names for Kohal. In the Arab world it is known as Kehal, while in the Indian subcontinent it is known as Kajal or Surma particularly in the Punjab.
Kohl was used in Egypt along with lipstick made from ocher oil.
Kohl (also kol, from Arabic kuḥūl, see alcohol known as Sirma or Kajal in the Subcontinent), is a mixture of soot and other ingredients, used by Egyptian and Asian women, and to a lesser extent men, to darken the eyelids and as mascara for the eyelashes. Kohl has been worn traditionally as far back as the Bronze Age. Kohl was originally used as protection against eye ailments. Darkening around the eyelids also provided relief from the glare of the sun.
Kohl eyeliner has the softest powder texture and is available in dark matte shades. Kohl is used to softly define the eye contour with a dark (usually black) colour. This product may come in several forms: pencil, pressed powder, or loose powder. It is usually applied to the inner rim of the eye (the pink area behind the eyelashes) unlike other eyeliners as it does not irritate the sensitive tissue in that area.
Depending on its texture, eyeliner can be softly smudged or clearly defined. There are four main formulas available on the market, each one for producing a different effect:
Liquid eye liner gives the most intense and precise line that perfectly defines the eyes and stays sharp over time. It is usually available in dark matte or iridescent shades and come in small bottle with a brush or felt applicator. It is difficult to apply and requires a steady hand. It is recommended for top eye lid only, as not only does it have a tendency to irritate the eye if incorectly applied, it also gives a very harsh line.
Harder powder-based eye pencil draws a clean and precise line and is easy to apply. It is available in dark matte shades.
Softer wax-based eye pencils contain waxes that ease application. They are good for smudging and come in a variety of colours. Bright blue, green, aqua, violet, or bronze liners are appropriate when a bright colour should be quickly and precisely applied in a line. Light beige or white liners are used to highlight eye lids and corners. This type of eye liner may come in a pencil, a cone or a compact with a brush applicator.
To come to a conclusion, the best eyeliners are to my opinion, M.A.C. (my favorite) - Max Factor - and last but not least, good old Maybelline NY

In the USA kaja/kohl only refers to the color of the cosmetic not the content. If you go to the FDA's website and look under cosmetics there is a article explaining about the dangers of real kohl.

Karl, definitely a 70s influence. They seem like a cool band. I just picked up their album. Anyway, good song. Not their best, but a good one. 1. Yes 2. Sort of, although they remind me a lot of My Morning Jacket, who's a current act. 3. Well, you got the album name already, but I'd say Alt/Folk Rock? I don't know, classifying bands never works out for me.
