We are finally getting to relocate back to the USA after being in Germany for two years. My husband only needs a major airport for his job. I am an actress and want to be within driving distance to LA but not in California as the cost of living is outrageous (though we could afford it if we had to) I have heard Phoenix (mesa) would be a good location for us as I might be able to get jobs in that city also. However Las vegas is aproximately 1.5 Hours closer and I would think there would be opprotunity there too. What is the opinion of people who live in these areas?

I also need to make safety a high priority as I am a young female and I will be by myself for weeks at a time when my husband does have to travel. Thanks so much for your help! Also the more specific you can be about good areas to live in, comparing living costs, etc the better.

Both places are extremely warm and dry in Summer, however in winter it's mild (60s). I can not speak for Arizona, but one thing to look at is insurance (home/auto, etc) and it is very expensive in Las Vegas. I just moved from California and my car insurance more than doubled...and I have a perfect driving record. Nevada doesn't have state tax unlike California, I'm not sure about AZ.

Depending on where you are looking in California determines if housing is comparable or not. I came from Fresno in the Central Valley and housing in LV is comparable to what I previously paid. SO CAL is about 4 times more expensive for housing than in Fresno. Gas is just as expensive here as it is in CA.

The areas I suggest looking into if you were to move to LV are Southern Highlands, Summerlin, Green Valley, Anthem, and Seven Hills.

Construction on I-15 between LV and San Bernadino County can be a NIGHTMARE when driving back and forth. On Friday nights the 15 backs up to a crawl with the tourists driving in, and Sundays going back to CA is the same. On the map it looks like LV is 1.5 hours closer, but if there's an accident, you're looking at HOURS. My girlfriend drove back from Riverside to LV recently and it took her 10 hours because of an accident on the 15.

Oh, and drivers in Las Vegas are MANIACS!!!!

Sorry, can't speak for AZ at all, although people I know who are from there miss it.

I like both but Las Vegas is more tolerable climate wise in my opinion. There's also more to do in Las Vegas.

Phoenix has a lower cost of living though and is a major hub for America West so traveling might be cheaper. Flying back to Las Vegas could be expensive depending on the time of year and flights are almost always packed.

Neither spend the money and go to California. There are some nice areas around L.A. Find a nice residential area.
Phoenix is overpopulated and Las Vegas is full of tourists.
