It stems from the Roman word pedagog - which was a slave used to look after children (a nanny basically). Then - definition as above.

The important thing to remember is that pedagogy refers to the teaching of children (compare similar words like peadophile, peadriatric, etc. all of them relate to children). The teaching of adults is called andragogy.
