Focus on how you want to use the machine and any special applications you might need.
Screen size, disk space, speed, memory and overall packaging are important. Mostly when viewed from how you want to use the machine.
I work with a lot of documents and need a large displace. My screen size is 17".
If you want to run something that is on the Mac then you need to be running the Mac OS (OS X). If you want to run something that is only on the PC then you can get a Mac from Apple plus a copy of Windows or you can buy a PC with Windows. Note that no PC manufacture offers the ability to run Apple's OS X so the Mac lets you run either but the PC does not.
If you have a specific application you will use a lot see if there is a hardware specification. A portable is not the best machine for gaming. Most an issue with video adaptors available.
Weight and the packaging can be a factor. Some people want something very small. Others are less concerned about the size & weight as they need the screen size (my situation).
Note that how you expect to carry the laptop is a minor thing to consider. I use a backpack that is designed for a 17" laptop. Much easier than my old computer bag that was closer to a briefcase.

Its not Really brand its quality of Componants:
Compare:
Clock Speed
Graphics Card
Memory
Warranty
Price
No of Ports
Screen Size
Look of the Case
With as meny manufacturers as you can be bothered with, Start at the £400 Mark and Work upwards until you find something that looks good to you. A lot of Machine manufacturers use the same componants and motherboards so the above is all the difference. Spend some time making your desicion and research anything you don't understand.

It's depend either you are heavy gamer or just an ordinary computer user. If you are into games, make sure you buy laptop with Windows OS and provided with powerful graphic card like ATI. Well, Vista is just around the corner! You can wait if you want. For brand, i recommend Toshiba. They are awesome! Acer also not bad depending on what type of processor you prefer. Core 2 Duo is great!

just an advice my friend, if you want to but a laptop, you shouldn't look about the Brand but you should look at the things the computer provide and also your purpose to having the laptop.
say, if you like to have a laptop for normal purpose if should be apple.

MacBook Pro. (Intel processor) No question.
I haven't looked back since getting mine. Got a really cool 'jaw-drop' factor too when you show it off to your mates :-)
With the intel version you can run XP on it too.
