I am not talking about TV shows like Will and Grace or Queer As Folk because not all the actors are gay anyway. What I am talking about is the gay guys that appear on talk shows or reality shows.Just about everyone one of them that appears on nationally syndicated TV shows seems to fit into the stereotypical gay man as an effiminate guy with a high pitched voice.

It drives me insane because I don't talk or behave like that.My partner doesn't talk or behave like that. Most of my gay friends don't talk or behave like that.I don't want to judge people and if guys are comfortabe being that way then I am happy for them. But when they are on TV I feel like America is seeing that and associating that with who I must be since I am gay.I want so bad to see gay guys get on TV and show America that we are not a stereotype. If anyone saw American Idol the other night during auditions in New York then you might recall the latest example of what I mean.
Where are the MEN?

Ashley,
When I ask "Where are the men?" I am talking about on TV.I just want, for once, to see regular gay guys like me and many of my friends represented on TV.I am tired of the stereotypes getting all the airtime. But mostly, I want to know why I never see those gay guys that are just your average Joe types that don't have an over the top effeminate behaviour and voice.

You are but one person and any straight person who expects you to be the gay poster boy and represent every gay man on earth is deluding themselves.

Go to a gay leather bar if you can stand the smell of cigar smoke and you will see men that sound, act and look like Russell Crowe.

Attract the man you want by being the man you are. Don't concern yourself with what other gay men are doing or saying.

****Ordinary gay men don't RATE ON TV. Straights WANT and EXPECT us to be EFFEMINATE. They won't watch 'boring' normal gay men because then they'll have to admit that gay men are just like everybody else. It scares straights to think that we are all really the same deep down inside.

yes and no. I like one or two girly tv shows, like pretty little liars and the voice. But if you mean do I 'act' gay then no, I don't fit the stereotype. I don't have a lisp or wiggle my hands like every straight guy thinks a gay guy is suppose to. I like to play soccer and I like listening to music. Just cause I'm gay doesn't mean I'm not a guy =P, or shall I say. A normal guy. Although I would like to say that gays that like fashion and do have lisps and fit the stereotype don't deserve people hating on them. In fact one of the guys I liked had a naturally feminine voice (no lisp tho) and I found it extremely sexually attractive! So I think it depends from guy to guy. There can be a straight guy that everyone thinks is gay cause he's a little feminine but it could turn out he's as straight as a bat.

^high5. Thats the very thing I've been asking for a long time now. I think in part the ones that stand out like that queen on American Idol get all the focus because they stand out. The men are just there and blend in because, well, they do. In part I think we're trained not to notice them in a crowd when there is the stereotypical over the top diva-wanna-be screaming for attention. Know what I mean?

I see what you're saying & i agree. For example: The show Cbs the class, the guy that is married but is in the closet acts the sterotype. Eventhough he's gay in real life, on the show he talks in a high pitch voice, sway his hands etc. I think tv shows want a good laugh and high ratings, they don't want the truth.

You only notice the stereotypes that personally offend you.

Gays are no more sterotyped on daytime television than any other group. Stright males, for example are frequently stereotyped as uneducated, boorish and violent monsters who abuse and cheat on their spouses. In commercials, straight men are seen as hopeless incompetents who cannot feed or dress themselves without a woman's help.

Television features stereotpes because its a lot easier to get a laugh out of a stereotypical character than out of a thoughtful and unique individual.

When a straight reporter is looking for a gay opinion, of course they're going to sniff out a gay person that's OTT or "typical". How else would the viewers "accept" that this is a bona fide GAY person? Everything on TV is supersize, larger than life.

Not every effeminate man with a high-pitched voice is gay. Also, there are probably a lot of gay men on TV that you don't even know are gay.

You ask some delightful questions but I wonder, seeing as it is not a question Simon/Paula/whoever else would ask of the contestant:

How do you know that all of the MEN who appear before the camera aren't gay?

is your Gaydar that good? :)
