I own a shop, and have seen this for years. It is a common problem with a common answer. They make some stuff called belt dressing to spray on them, but it is messy, works only for a little while, and must be cleaned off before new belts are put on. Use a piece of bath soap to rub on the pully side of the belt. This will help you determine which belt is squeeking, makes no mess and doesn't require you to clean it up when installing a new belt. Once you have determined which belt is making the noise, remove it, and inspect the pullies that it turns. Spin them to see if they are wobbling, bent, or have a bad bearing. Use some course sandpaper to knock the shine off the V part of the pully. Notice how deep the belt sits in the pully, as too deep it squeeks, not deep enough it squeeks. Length is not the only thing to pay attention to. It may have the wrong angle on the V part of the belt making it squeek. Look at all the pullies in line for this belt, and make sure they are the same as far as the angle on the V, and that they are in alignment with each other. Many times when a new belt is installed, it will stretch some, and will need adjusted again after about a month, but will work fine afterwards. Knocking the shine off the V in the pullies with course sandpaper will help the belt wear its own pattern, thus eliminate slippage. It doesn't need much, just enough to get rid of the shine. This also cleans any foreign matter off the pully such as coolant. Any coolant leak will ruin a belt, and cause it to squeek. The sandpaper gets the coolant off too. Adjust the belts to about a 1/2 inch in either direction when moved up and down on the pullies.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

Are the belts new? You should re-check the belts yourself (ANYONE can do that, no mechanic needed), and make sure they have enough tension. Most cars, you should be able to move the belt maybe 1/2 inch either way if you push or pull on it.
Is it an older car? If it was made before the 90s, you can probably adjust the belts individually, by loosening a bolt and adjusting the position of one of the pulleys. If it's later, it probably has a "serpentine" belt is one belt which snakes around a whole bunch of pulleys. Those belt usually have automatic belt tensioners. I'm not sure if those can actually be adjusted. They usually need to be replaced.
Comedy option: oil the pulleys! (Don't do this)

The serpentine belt is tensioned by skill of a...tensioner. The water pump alternator loafer and tensioner all have bearings so something must be making the noise. Water pump bearings dont squeal neither do alternator bearings. They make a corpulent clunky sound.(complicated to describe this noise) in case you have get right of entry to to a stethescope (sp?) then with the vehicle working place it close to the guy factors and isolate the noise. My wager is the belt is slipping because of the fact one among 2 issues, it is stretched so there is way less rigidity on it, it is slipping because of the fact between the bearings i discussed is in a position to bypass.

There are five reasons why drive belts become noisy. 1. tension incorrect. 2.Belts are misaligned. 3.worn or old belts. 4. worn bushes or bearings on pulleys. 5. Worn pulleys. Any one of these faults if not corrected can cause problems in the other four. It is highly recommended you change your drive belts at the manufacturers specified instructions to prevent further mechanical deterioration to the parts specified. I hope this helps. Have a good day!

Replacing the "vee" belts usually will stop this, however on some motors this is a bit of a mission. Temporary fixes are: (with the motor turned OFF!)
liberally sprinkle talcum powder on the inside surfaces of the "vee" belt(s) and pulleys. or,
Apply a liquid scourer in the same manner, then start the engine and allow to idle for a minute or two, but DO keep your face away from the fan/belt(s) as this is kinda messy.

putting a little of water or oil over them with the engine working will stop the noise for a while, but you´ll have to change them any way.
