I have one, and am not sure who to ask for a second.

Would be best to find a second or would 1 be OK.

Ideally, you should have a reference from your current job and a reference from your last job, that way the company you are applying to have some notion of how well you have performed over your recent employment history.

If you can only get a reference from your current job, you can include a personal reference from someone who knows you well and has a place of standing in the community, for example, a teacher, doctor or someone from the armed services.

Failing that, you can include someone who knows you well as a character reference, but most companies won't except these.

Leave blank and say available on request. They will be fine with this as some people applying for Job might not have had a job before. A reference doesnt have to be a former employer, it can be a friend that has own business etc.

I don't have references on my CV, I just put 'references are available on request'

Make sure you have two references ready though in case a job comes through, one should be your present or most recent employer.

2 Referees are ESSENTIAL. Can either be current and a previous employer. Or a Teacher and someone who knows you well - Doctor or an Adult Friend who has known you for a number of years - if you are applying for your first or second job.

Yes you do really but one could be a character reference then you can use a good friend and be sure they will give you a great reference.

Usual & best practice is not to quote any on your CV. If a prospective employer wishes to take matters further, they'll ask.

My understanding is that normally one does not list references on the CV but includes a statement that "Refrerences are available upon request".

However if the the prospective employer specifically already asked for references on the CV then you must include them on the CV.

My experiences has been that at least two references are normally asked for. Sometimes three are asked for.

you dont need any on your CV.

most people ask for them on application forms, typically 1 former employer and 1 character reference.

It depends how many your potential employer asks for.

Having 2 by default won't do you any harm.

If they ask for 2 then yes; you can approach your bank and ask them for one believe it or not!
