There is only two ways that I know that you can get a false positive.
1. If you have recently been pregnant and have had a miscarriage.
2. If you left the test sit too long (hours not minutes).
In any case congratulations.
First the doctor will do a urine and blood work to confirm the pregnancy and to get your levels. Then the doctor will do a history (ask questions) and physical. Then the doctor will do an examination. While you wont have a pap smear, the doctor will examine you. I believe the doctor will look at your cervix.
At the conclusion the doctor will give you his/her findings and order additional tests (such as a sonogram) and set up your next appointment.
Some tips for a healthy pregnancy:
Eat healthy: Remember what ever you are eating, the baby will too. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Drink at least 4 glasses of milk per day. You need to cut out or at least limit your consumption of caffeine.
If you drink, at least minimize to a glass of wine or beer occasionally. If you smoke, this should be the time you quit. Smoking causes problems for the unborn fetus.
You are going to want to participate in exercise. Walking is great. I would not participate in weight lifting or heavy exercises. Look in your area gyms, they usually will have a class for pregnant women.
In the first trimester and last trimester, you will be fatigued so get plenty of rest.
Congratulations. Pregnancy and motherhood is a wonderful experience. Just remember to take it easy and follow your doctors advise.

First of all congratulations the pregnancy tests can give a false negative reading but can not give a false positive reading because the chemical that the test checks for is only in a woman's body while she is pregnant. It's been a few years for me but for my first exam the doctor did a blood test to make sure I was pregnant, and when he got the positive result he also did a pap smear and other general womenly checks. Then he scheduled me for my next appt.

congradulations. A false positive is not very common...
at the first visit, i guess it would depend if you are going to an ob or a family practitioner. I went to an ob for my first visit. At this visit they took blood, did a urine test, a vaginal exam, pap smear, gave me prenatal vitamins, and asked me ALOT of questions.
Also, i had to go back the next day for an ultrasound because they thought mine was an ectopic pregnancy, but it was only a cyst. (but that's not every person.)
As for over the nest nine months.... eat healthy, take your prenatal vitamins everyday, get exercise (it helps with a speedy labor if you are in shape) rest a lot. if you experience morning sickness try some ginger ale and crackers also, hey seel preggnancy candies especially for morning sickness. You can get them at babies r us or motherhood maternity stores. They help! Also, drink ALOT of water.
DO NOT drink ANY alcohol (fetal alchol syndrom http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fas/ ) and you should stop smoking as well- low birth weight as well as respiratory problems in your baby. Don't take medications without first consulting your doctor (some tylonol is okay if you need it- but no ibeprofen it induces miscarriages)
Congrads again.... its going to be a long wait....

I'm not sure what your doctor will do but at my first visit I was about 6 weeks. They did another pregnancy test to verify the results and then I had an ultrasound to verify how far along I was. I do believe they also did some cultures and bloodwork.
Congrats & goodluck!!

The over the counter test are not 100%. Good idea seeing an MD right away if you think you might be pregnant.
The MD's test is rather quick and easy.

When I found out I was pregnant also so with clear blue I went to the doctor. she took a urine sample for testing and results came back next day. Positive. They put you on folic acid if your not already on it and send you for an ultrasound. Just to see how far your on. At some stage they will do blood test to check on hormone level and will repeat this with in a few days to check that hormone levels are rising. Hope this is of some help to you.

they will normally set up a follow up appointment in a month. If your initial testing appointment is all it is, a test, then they won't do blood work or any of that, they'll do that in one month. and the odds of a false positive are slim to none.

from my understanding you can't get a false positive but you can get a false negative.. The doctor may do another urine test or opt to give you a blood test. Hope all goes well!!
