I love Electronic & Software Engineering, but I can't find a job to satisfy my interests, suggestions?

I live in the UK, where real engineering seems to be dead...it all seems to have gone to the US or China. I'm on a really good wage, and am contemplating taking a research diploma that pays a 3rd of my current wage just to feel happy.

There must be something exciting going on in the UK?
