Since Gandhi wasn't a Christan he couldn't be called a saint! ..That title is reserved for Christan's..
So that makes him a Political opportunist!!. he saw injustice and wanted change, he knew that militarily he could never force the British to leave India. so the use of civil disobedience was his only measure open to him.
The British rule over India came to end not because of Gandhi, but because at the end of the 2nd world war Britain was virtually bankrupt! and in debt to the Americans for billions. At the time the Americans didn't want Britain to continue with its influence and empire power, and so didn't allow the British into the Marshall plan which was set up to rebuild Europe. The effect of this alone drained finances further and so there simply wasn't enough money to rebuild Britain infrastructure and pay to keep large armies in empire possessions.
In a sense India's freedom has the Germans Japanese and Americans to thank for it coming into being. If the 2nd world had never happened India Pakistan and all those other empire possessions would still be under British rule.

Gandhi was a living saint and was received in England by the people as the saviour of India before World War Two. Gandhi believed that Indian Independence could be achieved through peaceful means, by sit-ins and civil disobedience such as making your own salt so as to avoid the salt tax brought in by the British. Gandhi thought peace and love and asked the people to avoid hatred, especially that which was based upon religious belief.
Here in UK the Labour Movement promoted Gandhi for all they were worth. You have to be aware that the first two Labour members of parliament were Indians.
Hinduism is probably the world's oldest surviving faith it being now ten thousand years old. Gandhi was a Hindu and beloved by Hindus and Christians alike.
Mahpna is the Indian word meaning Saint. Thus being given the title by the People of India, he was a living saint in Hinduism and likewise a saint for Christians too.
After Jesus Christ, Mahpna Gandhi was probably the greatest living human being ever. He lead into to Independence through a peaceful revolution. He died a martyr of his people and of the peace loving peoples of the world. He will always be loved.
In political terms, Gandhi was 'left'.

clever calculated mixture of both.... although his intensions sure lead that his thoughts was in the right place he needed some kind of hold to safeguard his life. If he was a common man, it would have taken the Brits a split second to shoot him down, but because he was a politician... the Brits had to oblige in order to prevent a national uproar.
Christians/ Brits promoted him as he was a guy against violence and the country by itself did not provide any hassle for Brits. Even though at that time Brits were cruel, Gandhi and Indians always took the path of peace.

Gandhi could not become sanctified since the Roman Catholic Church, via the Pope, does the sanctification and, as someone has already pointed out, Gandhi was not a Christian.
He was, however, a very strong, determined man who sought freedom for his people via peaceful means -- something he achieved with overwhelming success.

neither he was a natural leader who wanted nothing more than a better life for his people , he was a great man because he never altered his views , no doubt after a very short time as leader he could have moved to a palace and put his feet up , he did not , he remained true to his word unto death and this above any other reason is why he is so celebrated .
