how to make those lightsaber effects thingy>>?

im not really a geek or anything.. but i have this project that my friends and i have to do and i thought starwars effect would be a great idea. what software or something do you use in able to have this effects like the lightsabers do.. ive seen the movies they do at youtube.com and yeah they were really impressive pretty cool.. so anyone know how to do those effects>>?

There's nothing wrong with being a geek! The lightsabres in the original Star Wars were painted in frame by frame, but they don't make movies like that no more, so I hope you have luck finding the software.
