I agree that we have to discard the meaningless archaic tradition. But, we must have a respect for our tradition and culture. A society that loses touch with its roots will be like a ship in a turbulent ocean, going rudderless. The collective wisdom of our forefathers, as evident in the tradition and culture, is as good as a treasure, handed to us.

Good question. As one of the oldest countries and cultural "groups" in the world, India clearly has a lot of accumulated baggage to overcome in terms of social equality, caste discrimination, skin color complexes, religious strife and so on.
However, lets remember now especially that you are witnessing social evolution in action. With the technology boom in full swing, you are seeing the liberalization and "westernization" of the younger Indian middle-class on an unprecedented scale- along with it, the questioning of the value systems. Formerly taboo subjects like divorce, inter-caste marriage, homosexuality, pre-marital sex are all now becoming topics of discussion (even in the movies, which are such a powerful psychosocial medium in that country) as Indians start exploring their individuality as people not cultural standard bearers, at least in more developed areas.
This will of course carry on to new generations, which will place less importance on dogmatic acceptance of tradition toward reason and logic. Scientific and economic progress are always at odds with tradition, because they are polar opposites (look at every country in the world and you will see this effect).
Remember, India being what it is, this process will be slow to overcome the powerful forces of conservatism. If this new generation of Indians are smart, they will keep the colorful and positive traditions and discard the more hateful ones.

well to make the indian society broadminded ,this will be a combined effort. The indian media, education and the awareness will have to play a key role. the indian cinema, the movies present a clear picture of our society and make the peole aware of the problems along with their situation in an effective way.
also the globalisation in every respect along with the technological advances is another factor.people coming to india and people going from india can share their views with us.
also the education is a nother major factor that will eradicate the typical orthodox thinking of ours giving way to fresh and new ideas.

Human beings wants to remain safe and secure. For that they build so many cages around them and they feel they are more secure inside. If any one tells them to remove the cages they start resisting it. These people form a group and dissuade others who try to move out.
Compared to 50 or 100 years back the present generation is far better. With improvement in information and communication majority of the people are coming out of shackles.

Be broadminded yourself. Gandhiji said "Be the change that you want to see in the world". Lead by example, there has never been a better way.... :-)
