Why pick on Shakespeare?
Appreciation of literature that is much more recent than Shakespeare also appears to be dying out.
Apart from those who barely read, there is a large group who only appear to read the most recent and the most fashionable.
(Who will queue for the latest Harry Potter and either not care or not realise that much better has already been written in the genre.)
There is a hurdle to overcome with Shakespeare, the now unfamiliar English usage of his day. There are ways round this, and it need not be a problem anyway: there remain many who prefer the authorised, "King James" version of the bible, complete with its now archaic English.
But the ideas, the plots... Many of those have not dated at all. Love, revenge, betrayal, confused communications, misunderstood situations...
They are near eternal.

Like Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the language is getting old, and harder to understand for the young. When you interpret the meanings, i find the stories to be very well written with humor.
The same is true of Shakespeare. The plots and character of his play are well liked and understood, The old fashion humor and jokes are hard to understand. Once you interpret the humor, jokes and language the plays are awesome.
so studying Shakespeare is harder, taking more time. This is time well spent when you reading these worth while plays

he is an over rated hack, just some two bit writer churning out trashy works like babara cartland to make a living. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, real great plots, but because the language was different back then, the idiots of today think he was some sort of genius. You get better writing on a hallmark card.
