I don't dislike anybody unless they personally do something to offend me!I find it hard to believe some people can hate/dislike an entire nation-but unfortunately it happens.I find it childish and without genuine reason (usually due to lack of understanding of other cultures). There are horrible French people, just as there are British, and many other Countries. But it's illogical to tar every person from one country with the same brush.

The French and British have always traditionally disliked each other. It's all to do with history, going back a long way.

It's cultural differences as well, like:

They are very touchy about their language, and keep trying to get it declared the business language of the world. Hard luck, guys. England wins. At one time, they banned the use of English words in french, like "le weekend", "le football" etc. But what they don't understand is this leads to a dying language. The English language has the most vocabulary of any language in the world, I believe. The English don't care what language a word comes from. If it's useful, they'll have it. And that's what makes English far and away the best and most descriptive language in the world.

And, for goodness sake, *don't* tell me you can assign a sex to, say, a table (le table), or a pen (la plume). How the hell do you know? Did you ask them?

The French usually pretend not to understand you if you try to speak french to them.

Most English schoolchildren have to struggle through several years of french lessons. This, alone, is enough to make you hate the french.

The french farmers are always going on strike at the drop of a hat, blockading ports and roads and generally getting in everyone's way.

They gave us a french pox! Although, I believe that they called it the English pox.

Oh yes, and I believe there was some difficulty in WWII.

Actually, I think you'll find that the Canadians hate the French even more than the British do.

More like they don't always understand each other, but that again is a bit of a stereotype. There is also the long history of several centuries of war (Ironically started by the Anglicized Normans who wanted both their French and English lands).
On a one-to-one level they seem to get along just fine, speaking as an outsider.

Personally, I like the french. I have met some idiots, but also met some cool characters. On holiday in Egypt I was teaching a French bloke English and he came to me every day to learn more. I find that you find idiots in all nationalities, including English, so I'm quite accomadating of cultures and classes. Theres not that much different between us apart from language and recipes

Yes they do. Don't really know why, but it could be two reasons.
1) Perhaps the poms whinge about France as well.
2) Because there are a lot of British people migrating to France.

You had better believe it frere. The people who live across the English Channel have always been mistrusted by the English. No good has ever come of any association between Engl;and and France since long before William the Conqueror and napoleon and De Gaulle and Mitterand and Chirac. Your fries are rubbish, your wine tastes of vinegar and your letters have holes in them.

Its not that we dislike each other, just that they get a bit upperty every 100 years or so and we have to remind them of their place. Usually with a war.

naaa that ain't all that true...there's this kinda 'legend' because of the past, historically, but then...it's more about people in general, in many countries, believeing that the French are not all that friendly at all...and that's quite true, esp. in Paris.

If you say you're British they really don't like you because they assume you're English; if you tell them you're Scottish they warm up to you a bit.
