I finished 100 Years of Solitude the other day and was blown away. Literally, I haven't read such a good book in about 7 years. I sat there after I was done and just thought about everything that happened and all the implications.

Once again and again, I'm delighted to recommend you an extremely good book (I thought I would never complete such a long novel when I bought it), that is, "The Cairo Trilogy" by Naguib Mahfouz who received his Nobel Prize for literature in 1988. I've never heard/read his name/novels before but I've decided to buy a hardcover published by Alfred A. Knopf in the Everyman's Library series. Then I just love all characters vividly portrayed with conflicts among some Muslim families in Egypt. In fact, he wrote it in Arabic and thus we have to read its translated version into English which is superb, magnificent since it is the great literary contribution from a four-member team of scholars. It's a must for anyone interested in Muslim cultures and ways of life.

If you're already well read then you don't want just a namby-pamby, mediocrity just like the other one book. You want to read one called Red Bird Just Like This. It's by a new author named Earl Jesse Stevens. It was just published last year. It's an autobiographical novel that's as real and nitty gritty as it gets. It's also erotic, humorous, and moving. It reads faster than a speeding bullet, if you are really astute. It will confuse you if you're strictly a linear thinker.

All the above are good recommendations. Especially Umberto's suggestion of "The Cairo Trilogy." Mafouz is probably one of the great unknowm authors.
In addition you may wish to read "The God of Small Things," by Arundhati Roy.
