Is it just the headphones that come with it or is the sound genuinly rubbish?

With new headphones, will it sound fine?

It's probably a combination of things.

A: Cheap Earbuds.

B: Song Track dB's are set too high, thus causing clipping.

C: Clipping (distortion) is then exaggerated when the EQ is used.

Resulting in:

Crappy Sound Quality.

What you can do to fix it is

A: Buy better in-ear headphones.

B: Use MP3Gain to lower the song track dB's to 92-95dB to get rid of most of the clipping.

C: Stop using EQ unless you do B.

better earphones depends on the music you listen to. each set has a different sound signature that can be better or worse. Also, isolation is factor, and whether you want it or not.
