Caste system is officially banned in India, it is a legal and punishable offence to discriminate people on the basis of their caste, religion or region. You may refer to the IPC act 1949, 1956 and finally 1999 for prevention of discrimination based on region or religion.

As far as differences between north and south is concerned, I think people from the south are partially responsible for the same. Southern people tend to alienate themselves from the true Indian identity. They do not want to speak in hindi even though its the national language, they do not appreciate northern people as visitors, whether business or tourism, there are more taxes on hindi movies, and a "One India, All Indian" culture is visibly absent in the south, except for the cosmopolitan regions like Bangalore, Hydrabad etc. Only one state "Kerala" has taken the right step and have not alienated itself from an all India identity.

Hindi films tend to discriminate and mock not only the south or southern accent but also that of north and east, eg: panjabi's, bengali's, bihari's etc. But that seems to be purely for entertainment purpose and not really something that carries a real stigma.

There is no discrimination on regional basis just regional identies
like a Yankee and a Texan. Northerners have no power to discriminate over Southerners and vice-versa. Each region has its own specialties and consequent pride. As regards caste system its effect is very minor since the natives are falling head over heels for the almighty Rupee (Indian Currency). People are more conscious about economic class than caste. So the almighty "moolah" rules and any sin or virtue can be bought and sold for a price. One thing good about caste system is it remains hidden until well into a conversation whereas with racism there is no room to hide. It is hate at first sight, since no amount of money can change skin colour.

Discrimination? I thought it's grouping for a better management. Out there in the far west there's a country whose each state it free to make some laws with a set of rules. What would you consider that? Good management or legal discrimination?

India is the only nation in which different cultures blend in. Be proud of it. We call them by titles like Bengalis, Punjabis, Gujaratis, Mallus, Anna or what ever. But we do get involved in each other's cultural activities don't we? I've been to a lot of places in India and seen magnificent display of this cultural harmony among people... In which corner of India do you stay?

In India, like nobody else in the world, we have vivid colours of tradition and customs.. different festive to celebrate year long!

Yet, we only try to show supreme above the rest. We forget to celebrate for only indifferent in us to understand the very culture and the way of life they live and respect it.

Movies only portray what will sell... but its you who determine it!!

I don't think there is any discrimination.. if you ask me, I like different colours of tradition and ofcourse celebration!!

India still uses the caste system. One of my advisors at the university is from India. She was lucky enough to be born in the highest caste, but she says it is an unfortunate system. One can't move up in the system if born in the lower caste--they're there for life.
