I once caught a creature with my butterfly netting many years ago on the outskirts of Tapei whilst collecting butterlies. It made buzzing noses, struggled in the net and showed strength that left me no doubt to it being more than just an insect. This made me wonder - are there any birds in the Trochilidae family in Taiwan? can any birds that hover be observed in South East Asia?

Hummingbirds are only found in the Americas. There are a number of large moths in the sphinx family that resemble hummingbirds. Perhaps it was one of these. They are almost the same size and feed in the same manner as hummingbirds. Their proboscis even resembles the beak of a hummingbird.
