Initially I thought crying because pain of any kind can contort the face and frowning uses most, possibly all, of the facial muscles. Then I considered how relaxed we are when laughing yet our faces are drawn up across the middle.

I am not sure but I think crying might use more muscles whereas laughing uses the same ones deeply for short spurts.
I wonder if trying to keep a straight face would use the most the hardest..

Frowning uses the most facial muscles so the answer would be crying...besides laughing is good for the soul.
