My husband can not do it on purpose. What happens is his thumbs feel stiff for a second and then he bends them and they crack. After which, all is back to normal. This is especially true of his right thumb. His right thumb is a little shorter then the left one. I was wondering what causes this? Does his right thumb crack more often because it is shorter?

Do you mean crack "noise" or crack "break skin"?
The noise is just a bubble of air (thought to be nitrogen) that gets released when moved. My fingers crack a lot also. Still no proof this is bad. Also could be from an injury. I have sprained my ankle so many times that I don't know it when I do anymore, but it "cracks" constantly. When i walk "crack, crack, crack...."
