my parents gave me a car and i have been using it for quite a while. im a new driver and i dont know much about cars. I have a simple question.. please dont bash me.

anyways, there was one incident that my steering wheel locked after parking. its like for anti-theft thingy. How can I set it to lock position? and is it effective? I was able to lock it but not intentionally. I tried experimenting on how to lock the steering but I failed. Any ideas?

It is like switching the steering wheel to the left and it'll lock into position.

Just remove your key like normal.. This will set the lock. Then just turn the wheel a bit in either direction and the lock will snap into place. Done.

Not really neccessary to do, as if someone wants to push your car away, and the lock has not snapped into place, as soon as they try to turn the wheel it will snap into place. If they plan on steeling your car they will know how to get around it.

What you really need to know is this. Sometimes that lock will snap into place and the wheel will have enough pressure against it that you cannot turn the key to unlock it later. What now? Apply a small amount of pressure to the key in the unlock direction and with your other hand try to move the steering wheel back and forth to release the pressure.

Enjoy your new freedom with that new license.

With most cars, if you turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or right after turning the car off and removing the key it works, Other cars have a position for the key to turn it back (rather than forward to start the car) and you turn the wheel when the key is in that position. It usually says lock. Hope this helps

Most vehicles just turn the key off and remove it then turn the steering wheel until it locks. As for being effective not against the real pros but they aren't going to be going after a 97 Civic.

Try tilting the wheel up and down or turn the wheel left to right. I don't know if this can lock it into place. Also is there maybe a owners manual that came with the car? Maybe it might talk about it in there. Good luck though.

Yes friend..that's the way to set your steering lock. Wrench the steering wheel to one side or the other. Then your steering will lock.

You obviously know how to unlock it.

Nobody is going to bash you for asking stuff like this...we all had to learn. xx
