From a Christian perspective, it is because sin exists in the world. Before the Fall, there was only good in the world. As soon as sin entered the picture, so did all types of evils: sickness, famine, violence (between men and between men & animals), death, and so forth. Think of how this is explained by the Greek myth of Pandora's box. And the reason why even "good" people fall victim to the horrors of this world is that they are sinful, and so are others. Even believing in Christ as your Savior cannot prevent you from being subjected to the world's evils. It can, however, prevent you from the ultimate destruction that resulted from sin, which is death.
If you're interested in reading more about this, I recommend a book called "The Case for Faith" by Lee Strobel, the chapter titled "Since Evil and Suffering Exist, a Loving God Cannot."
Great question, and I'm eager to see how others respond! :)

Most people are good. Call it luck. karma, whatever. Something bad happens, usually the result of a poor decision or oversight.

Free Will is such that our decisions have permanent, lasting effects. God does not follow us around cleaning up our mistakes, therefore those who come after us will suffer for them.
Additionally, Christianity teaches that no one is "good" but "God." Therefore, there aren't really any "good people" for bad things to happen to.

There's an old Asian proverb that goes something like, "So this Asian guy was doing his thing, and one season his crops failed. 'How bad for you," said his neighbors. "Bad, good, who knows?" said the guy. Because his crops failed he had lots of time at home, and before you know it, he has a son. "How good for you," said his neighbors. "Good, bad, who knows?" said the guy. Son grows up, robs a bank. "How bad for you," said the neighbors. "Bad, good, who knows?" says the guy. Turns out that, by robbing the bank, the son prevented the bank teller from getting home to kill herself, as she'd planned. Nobody knew that. Good, bad, who knows?
Some might say that the morale of the story is that bad things can lead to good things. I say the morale is, who knows what's really bad or good?

because we all have freedom of choice...therefore some people choose to do bad things to other people...God is not a dictator, he would have to control us like machines if he was to prevent bad things happening to good people and he's not like that. he has given us the GIFT of freedom of choice and free will ..... its our decision HOW we use this gift...and also, its our decision HOW we react when bad things happen to us, even if we dont deserve them. what "happens " to you in life says nothing about you.... its how you REACT to what happens to you that will determine your success.

For disbelievers this life is a garden, and they live easily. It’s a jail for believers and have to work hard to win the real life.
