like if the deadline is January 15, and someone applies in Novemember and I apply January 1st, are they going to give preference or take the person who applied in Nov more seriously than me? Or is it basically as long as you make the deadline, you are given equal opportunity.

When I was on a graduate admissions committee, we would meet on the applications we'd received so far, and if any were particularly strong, we'd go ahead and offer admission, even if the deadline was still in the future. So that might save an applicant two months of wondering right there.

There were more applications closer to the deadline, so they were competing more for our attention, and we had less patience.
