I've just got an ipod nano - it's come with a white plastic stand thing that the ipod slots into. What's the point of this? It doesn't stand up or anything.

Its an adapter so the Ipod will fit into the standard iPod dock.
Normally the dock is made for the bigger sized iPods, the plastic thing downsizes the slot so it fits nicely into the dock.

It's an "iPod Dock Adapter," ostensibly to allow you to use your iPod Nano with accessories (i.e. speakers) designed to hold larger iPod models. See the official Apple Knowledge Base article for details.

on some of the new music systems that are coming onto the market you need a docking station or shoe this bit if plastic helps to dock the ipod in the right place on some of these hifi systems

Its a Dock adapter. Ever see all those gizmos that your ipod can sit in, like speakers and alarm clocks? The little white doodah that came with your ipod adapts that seat so your ipod sits snugly.
