Gil Bellows first met his Ally McBeal co-star Calista Flockhart when they were both theater actors in New York. As he sat across from her at play readings, little did Bellows know that the pair would one day star on one of television's most popular shows. A veteran stage actor, Bellows' stage credits include roles in productions of King Lear, A Snake in the Vein and The Diary of Anne Frank. The actor is perhaps best known to filmgoers for his breakthrough role as an inmate in the film The Shawshank Redemption (1994). Bellows was lucky to get the part: It was originally offered to Brad Pitt, who passed on it to do Legends of the Fall. Bellows' film credits also include roles in Judas Kiss (1998), Miami Rhapsody (1995) and Love and a .45 (1994). Appearing in Looking for Richard (1996), which starred and was directed by Al Pacino, was among one of the most rewarding jobs of Bellows' career. A native of Vancouver, Bellows currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Rya Kihlstedt (whose credits include Home Alone 3 and Deep Impact) and their baby daughter Ava Emanuelle, born in April of 1999. Towards the end of the 1999-2000 season of Ally McBeal, Billy Thomas died in the courtroom from a brain tumor.

> Description
Ally McBeal and Billy Thomas were going steady throughout their childhoods. Ally even followed Billy to Harvard law school despite having no interest in law. But when Billy chose to pursue a career in law away from Ally, their relationship came to an end. In the present, an old classmate of Ally's named Richard Fish gives Ally a job at his law firm, where Billy and his new wife are also working. This puts Ally in a predicament since she still has feelings for Billy which she's laboring to get over. At the office, Ally puts up with a nosy, gossiping secretary named Elaine, and an oddball lawyer named John Cage never seems to lose a case. At home, Ally's friend and house-mate Renée regularly advises her on her love life. The series follows Ally's trials and tribulations in life through her eyes, and caricaturizes her personal thoughts and fantasies.

Would you believe I cannot find anything on Ally MacBeal in the internet other than sellibg the complete DVD series.
Sorry, that series was popular for a while there, went for 5 series. Robert Downey Jr coming into its payroll was a nice move but the man kept getting into real trouble with the law.
What a shame, he is one great actor.
The question- Billy Thomas? He got written off.in series 3. Hmm- wasnt it an accident?
