a good question.
unfortunately i agree. right now in history there is not much difference in the parties only in individual politicans.
because of the way we have allowed the system to progess, it takes a LOT of money to become elected. And the big money comes from companies with agendas. If a race is too close to call beforehand these big companies will hedge their bets and donate to both parties. Because these big companies were the reason they got elected many candidates will feel the pressure, real or imagined, to take care of their supporters, whether or not it is good for the country as a whole.
this can be changed by becoming a county of the people, by the people and for the people again. I am interested in the clean elections of arizona. they are trying to put big business on even ground with every one else by campain reform. Under the right leadership this could be very successful, but it will be an uphill battle to get this kind of campain reform in all 50 states because big business will be able to spend a lot more for advertising telling the people how bad it would be for them.
until then, research local candidates and if you find a good one vote for him at least, work for him if possible.

Both will switch sides on a whim. The most famous of which was Ronald Regan who started out as a devout Democrat. Even this year, the Democrats has a conservative anti abortion senator try and run against a Republican.
This was not always the case. The first Republicans came to power to start their own war, known as the U.S. Civil War. They thought of blacks as taking away jobs from the middle class farmers, because the southern farmers had the advantage of using slave labor to make their products cheaper. Does all this sound familiar? During this time, the Republicans were fairly liberal since they wanted the laws changed so the south didn't have that advantage.
The South had the conservative rich and poor racist Democrats that liked the cheap labor. The Democrats upgraded their platform after teh Republican Hoover thrashed the economy that helped create the Great Depression. The New Deal helped start the Democrats believing that it was the government should be the big brother to take care of the citizens. Social Security, Medicare and a chicken in every pot was their plan. Their plan was also very expensive and was hurting the middle class tax payers that were paying for the poor (AMT wasn't invented yet so the rich didn't have to pay taxes if they didn't make any more money). Even today, medicare and social security is going to collapse to the tune $40 trillion by 2040 because the country is not populating fast enough to generate the needed income to keep those two pyramid schemes alive.
The Democrats were going liberal to attract all those hippie baby boomers during the Vietnam civil war.
When the disaster that was Carter was happening, the religious conservatives got a game plan together to get the Republicans in power. They created a platform which is widely used today by the Republican party.
Now that the U.S. has been equally divided, the politicans flop around like fish on land even more than they use to. Why do you think Hillary Clinton is getting a conservative streak, after all she did vote for the second invasion into Iraq. Meanwhile, Bush is talking about universal health care, something the Republicans slammed Hillary Clinton on around 10 years ago.

If you're talking about Republikkkan and Democrat leaders, the main difference is that Democrat leaders pay lip service to caring about the poor, working class and middle clase, but they'd never actually do anything to upset the stranglehold corporate America has on government in the US. While Republikkkan leaders unabashedly and unapologetically promote the interests of corporations and the wealthy elite, while openly showing contempt for the poorest and most vunerable segments of the US population; all the while hypocritically thumping a bible. If you're talking about the difference between the Republikkkan and Democrat political consituencies: Republikkkans tends to be racist, bigoted, willfully ignorant, violent, psuedo-"Christians," chicken hawks who live to lick the boots of corporate America. Democrats just about everyone else who votes.

Not a hell of alot anymore it used to be republicans were all for big business growing and middle class supporting the financial needs while democrats were more about giving to the lower class and letting the middle support the nation financially now there really isn't much difference because the corporate lobbyists have both parties in their pockets.
