There are many different types of unions, and reasons for using them
Many are used to join two discreet or disparate types of materials, like copper pipe to a iron pvc coated pipe. Some are for convenience in repairs where replacing whole sectons or threading isn't posssible for other connections.
Many are threaded on both ends, utilizing a beveled ring, called a ferrule, that compresses between the smaller pipe to be joined, and the slightly larger body of the union, when the threaded end cap is tightened.
Without knowing exactly what it's being used on and for, it is imposible to know exactly what type you need, due to the wide varience in types.

it is a 2 part connector for copper piping. it has a brass ring in the middle and unscrews there to make it easier to make a new connection when there is a section-small-cutout of the pipe.
