I don't respect a flag at any time. A flag is a symbol, nothing more. Do I respect some of the things the flag stands for? Sure. But do I honour everything it stands for? No. Every major world power that is prominent in the early 20th century has a flag that has a dark thread in its history - for me in the UK, that dark streak includes the slaughter of the Australian aborigines, the oppression of India and large chunks of Africa and so on. For the States, it includes the massacre of the Native Americans, the use of the first atomic bomb and the insular paranoia of McCarthyism and Bushism.
Every flag also holds up a positive set of values - freedom, fairness, opportunity, peace - and these are things I believe should be celebrated and practiced every single day. But because so many unworthy people and regrettable actions have been swathed in flags, I think it might be a little unhealthy to fixate on the flag itself, because no-one can truly support or respect everthing it has been used to justify.

The flag represents the living whole of the United States. It represents the innocent youth, the rebellious teens, the working mothers and fathers, the soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors in harms way. It represents those fallen for the cause of liberty, those who fought, and paid the ultimate price for the good of the nation. It represents those missing and those captured. It represents freedom to all who love it, and it represents hope to all who seek it. To disgrace the American flag is to spit in the face of every human being on Earth, for the US does not belong solely to those within it's boarders. The US is a nation of the people, by the people, and for the people, and that is the last standing hope for our species. Where injustice runs rampant, where a dictator oppresses, where genocide is a daily occurrence, and where food and medical supplies are non-existent, the US is not far behind. Though our leaders and laws change, and politics get in the way of doing the right thing, the flag stands for the same principle that it stood for when it was first sewn. -Freedom

We willearn to respect the national flag only when we learn to respect the nation. If we are not proud to be an Indian we shall continue to do the 'lip-service' to the national flag.

I won't show disrespect on other days, but, more respect will be shown on the above days, except on 1st May. Ist May is a workers day, but, not a national day, as the other two. It is not sufficient to show respect, but we should act to be true Indians. Then only, showing respect to our national flag will have some semblance.
Wish you a HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY.

it is pretty much true that most of us remember the colours of our flag only after it has been pinned up on the republic days and on independence days.this trend should change in the nearer future.it is high time that indians realise the value of our flag and respect it in a better way
