Hi, CeN,
- Upgrading to Vista from XP will very probably NOT erase your existing data.... the upgrade will only revamp the scheme, add the new applications and upgrade the management of the whole system (memory allocation, ports management, Drives, etc).
- HOWEVER, I strongly suggest you to back up all important data on a separate drive before inserting your new Vista CD; it might be lengthy and no fun, but believe me you could have very bad surprises (if for instance the 1st attempt to upgrade fails, and you need several reboot to complete the upgrade, you will most probably lose your data..).
This can be done on blank CDs or DVDs, your Video iPod, etc.
Finally I do not know what is your expertise in IT, maybe you have already decided to upgrade and like the new Vista features, in which case ignore the following; but for having beta tested Vista, I advise you to keep running your XP until it totally "wears out", mainly because Vista will be extremely EXPENSIVE for very little new / improved features; the only good reason is if you are a hardcore 3D gamer and need DirectX 10 support.
Otherwise save your money, keep your data secured, and upgrade to a MAC with OSX Leopard as soon as you can: no viruses, super stable, cheap software, user friendly, and 'Time Machine' will allow you to retrieve anything you deleted recently, a major breakthrough.
Cheers

For an update you will not lose any of your data, its only the system files that will change or updated. Even if you choose for a clean install the data will not be lost unless you format your drive.

Check requirements for Vista, they are more than XP.
