are you feeding your son baby food or solids yet? if not, maybe you should start it by now.
also, not all kids gain the same way. my eldest son was chunky and big....but my second son was small and did not gain much weight. but both were healthy and i used to be worried until later on i found out it is normal for children to grow at their own rate. as long as your doctor says he is find, then do not worry about it and continue nursing him. breast milk is the best milk you can give your baby.

not gaining weight at 8 months? first of all, what is the weight of your child, if it is between 6.5-10 kg, that is okay and within the normal range. at this age, you have to start giving solid foods to your baby, like mashed bananas, rice and other fruits. start giving fruit juices also. but stick to breastfeeding. as long as there is milk in your breast, as long as your baby sucks it and seems satisfied, there is no need to switch to formula milk. breastmilk is still best for babies. (up to 2 years old). and if you are afraid your baby's not getting all the nutrients he needs, you can give multivitamins just to have peace of mind. and at this time, you really don't expect much gain in weight like when your baby was 6 months and younger. 0.5 kg every month is fine, or even lower. what is not good is losing weight continuously. you can ask your doctor for further guidance.

Why would you stop? and add formula? Why not just try introducing foods now? A lot of mom's start solids around 6 months. Either way, you have given you baby a terrific start! Congrats!
Try checking out the website I've listed below. It is a tremendous source of information regarding any aspect of breastfeeding!
Good Luck!

I think that breast milk is best, but it is only sufficiant for the first 6 months of a babies life, after that it should be a combination of breast milk and solids.
Talk to your doctor about the best foods to start him on, but at 8 months breast milk is not enough for him to grow.

I would say that you may want to try formula to see if he will gain some weight that way. Try weaning him off of breast feeding to the bottle. I would say enfamil would be a good brand of formula to try. I know a lot of people who have used the brand and it worked well for their children.

First of all, have you spoken to your doctor to make sure that your baby is growing steadily? Babies grow in spurts and he may be right on track. I seem to recall that around 8/9 months they don't seem to gain weight as quickly because they are more physically active.
I wouldn't try anything different until you have your son evaluated by your pediatrician.

How much does he weigh?
Are you having problems breastfeeding him?
Does he by chance gnaw on your nipples, causing you pain and pinching them shut? I ask this because it is a typical symptom of acid reflux babies.
If so, start him on similac advance milk based formula with iron, or a generic equivalent, put gerber single grain plain rice cereal in his formula (1T per every 2 oz prepared formula), and most important:
Don't let him lay down flat on his back for 45 minutes after feeding him, no matter what.

First of all before you switch you might want to consult your doctor. Switching from breast to formula or milk can cause problems if your child can't tolerate certain formulas or cow's milk.

I would run this by your childs doctor, after all they medically know what is best for the kids. If you do decide to stop breast feeding you may want to try the Carnation products they are suppose to be the easiest transition for babies from breast to bottle.

Talk to your doctor first! Breastmilk is such a good diet for babies -- that isn't likely to be the problem unless you're not producing enough. Does your baby act still hungry even after emptying both breasts?
